Mountains rising above a sea of cloud at first light

Issue No. 78

Anno Domini MMXXVI

A small Hawaiian fellowship, established in the Territory of Hawai‘i, December 1947.

Behold.

A small Christian fellowship in Kaneohe, on the windward side of O‘ahu. Incorporated as a domestic nonprofit religious corporation in the Territory of Hawai‘i in 1947, and recognized as a 501(c)(3) church by the Internal Revenue Service the following summer. We have continued, quietly and without much fanfare, ever since.

Chapter I  ·  Heritage

On the morning of the
twenty-third of December.

A fountain pen at work on lined paper
From the territorial records of December 23, 1947.

On the twenty-third day of December, 1947 — twelve years before Hawai‘i would become a state of the union — a small Christian congregation placed its name on the books of the territorial government and began the quiet work it continues today.

Seven months later, in July of 1948, the Internal Revenue Service granted the fellowship its tax-exempt recognition as a 501(c)(3) church organization — a status it has held continuously, without interruption, for more than seventy-five years.

The fellowship has been kept, for many years, by the Haynes family. Raymond G. Haynes III serves as the fellowship’s registered agent in the State of Hawai‘i. Jane Haynes has served as Administrator since 2012. It has not grown large, nor sought to. It has simply, faithfully, gathered.

Layered mountains in the half-light

“Be still, and know
that I am God.”

Chapter II  ·  Sanctuary

Six places we have looked.

A sun setting over a grass field
— The hour that draws toward evening prayer.
A waterfall in a deep forest
— Where living water falls.
A figure beneath a star-strewn sky
— The lifting of the eyes to the hills.
Pacific cliffs and turquoise sea
— The leeward shore of O‘ahu, in late summer.
A simple white interior
— A room kept simply.
Light through leaves and rain
— The hour after rain.

Chapter III  ·  Convictions

Four convictions we have held
for as long as we can remember.

i.

Scripture

The Bible is our final authority for faith and practice — read, taught, and applied in the life of the fellowship.

ii.

Christ

We confess Jesus Christ as Lord, crucified for the forgiveness of sins, risen, and reigning over all.

iii.

Fellowship

We gather as a small community for worship, prayer, and mutual care — the way Christians have always gathered.

iv.

Service

We seek, in quiet ways, to serve our neighbors in Kaneohe and across the island of O‘ahu.

A fuller statement of faith may be requested from the fellowship’s leadership.

Chapter IV  ·  Stewardship

Kept, for many years,
by a single family.

Like many small fellowships of its era, Behold Christian Fellowship has been kept across the decades by a small, faithful nucleus of stewards. Today that responsibility falls to the Haynes family, who serve quietly — without titles of grandeur — in the work of administration and care.
